  SITA-MEDICOLLECT TECHNOLOGY

SITA-MediCollect supplies a large range of containers (collectors) in a range of sizes and designs to suit your individual waste needs. The containers we supply are designed for safer handling both for the staff in your workplace and for our staff during transportation and destruction.

SITA-MediCollect offers all types of waste collection services, using approved sharps containers (collectors) and recyclable clinical and related waste mobile bins (MGB'S) on a simple and efficient exchange service.

SITA-MediCollect is competent at handling all types of biohazard waste [clinical and related] which can be easily divided into all categories for segregation:

1. All Biohazard Waste: including pharmaceutical, anatomical, cytotoxic and sharps is completely destroyed eliminating any repercussions from infectious waste unlawfully disposed of in landfills. Thermal Destruction [incineration] and Matrix [alkaline oxidation] treatments are offered for peace of mind and assurance against any environmental and financial repercussions.

* A certificate of destruction is issued on completion of security/confidential work.

2. Confidential Data: SITA-MediCollect’s Disposal Facility guarantees total destruction of all sensitive documents and data. Our process destroys everything with no chance of recognition or reconstruction. All measurements and weighing is done on our premises.

3. Sharps: SITA-MediCollect provide standards approved sharps collectors in a full range of sizes, as well as trolleys for large collectors, trolley hanging baskets, and wall-mounting brackets.

ADDITIONAL SERVICES

Witnessed Incineration for all pharmaceutical waste is in accordance with Health Department Guidelines.
Pallets of Pharmaceutical waste may be collected by prior arrangement. Patient records, prescription stationery and other sensitive confidential medical documents can be collected and destroyed. Witnessed destruction of these items can be arranged by appointment.

GENERAL INFORMATION

CALCIUM (Alkaline) OXIDE – Process Description

The Calcium Oxide Process employs a high pH environment to disinfect/sterilise pathogenic
organisms by permanent disruption of membranes/capsids, and biochemical activity.
The treated waste need not be disposed of immediately post-treatment as it is still killing
organisms past 10 log places. The disinfecting chemical is neutralised over time (turning into
calcium carbonate), is preconditioned for landfill disposal and does not become a groundwater
pollutant.

Regulated medical waste enters the treatment site in secure bins which are manually moved
into position, where they are automatically raised and emptied of their contents into the receival
hopper. This is done on a frequent enough basis to make the Calcium Oxide process continuous
in its operation.

Calcium oxide or quicklime is added to the shredded waste admixture and mechanically
homogenised. Typically, a pH great than 13 is initially in the waste, the treated waste generally
exits the machine with a pH ranging from 10 to 12 units and is deposited into sealed containers.
The basic steps are summarised sequentially as follows:

• Regulated medical waste is continuously shredded in a closed vessel with a HEPA filtered negative air pressure

• The shredding process is continuously doused with an alkaline (calcium oxide) solution for disinfection and    aerosol control.

• The waste is conveyed to a Rotary mixer where calcium oxide and make-up water is added.

• The product is compressed into a large sealed bin for disposal. It is now biologically inert and starting to become chemically inert.

•SIMPLE and EFFECTIVE

INCINERATION - Process Description back to top

It is understood and acknowledged throughout the world that the use of alternative
technologies cannot handle all types of clinical and related wastes.
The Incineration method destroys all pathogenic, pharmaceutical, cytotoxins, sharps and
anatomical wastes providing volume and mass reductions of up to 95%, whilst converting
offensive matter into a innocuous mass and simultaneously providing waste heat for recovery
minimizing energy consumption, a process called 'Waste to Energy'.

SITA-MediCollect’s High Temperature Thermal Destruction Facility is described as the best of its kind
in Australia and has been operating successfully this way since 1994. The facility consists of a stepped heath and rotary combustion chamber, inspiration chamber (incorporating heat recovery), a 2 second retention (secondary) chamber, 2 heat exchanges and cooling tower before final Air Pollution Control Equipment (A.P.C.E.).

The Air Pollution Control Equipment (A.P.C.E.) effectively collects all particulate matter, captures
trace metals and organics, neutralises acid gases (HCI) and the formation of dioxins and furans in the combustion process. The A.P.C.E. used with SITA-MediCollect’s incineration process provides a highly efficient air cleaning system that sets us apart from the rest.

These state-of-the-art systems reduce the negative impacts on human health and improve the
act of clinical and related waste treatment, an essential service for W.A.
